Welcome!

WELCOME to Compassionate Guru!  My primary objective in creating this blog is to offer parents, siblings, relatives, caretakers and friends touched by special individuals with ongoing needs and unique talents an opportunity to share their experiences and support each other.

Every one of us is a “Guru” (one who disperses darkness/ignorance) at one time or another. When we share the knowledge of our experiences with others we could make a difference in their lives.

Over the years, as a mother of a son in the autistic spectrum, I had often wished and hoped to connect with people who could relate to our roller coaster ride of experiences….of fears, concerns, questions, confusion, accomplishments, successes and celebrations along the way.  As we walked down this challenging path in parenting, it was often the therapists, teachers and a few friends that supported us with their encouragement, input, guidance and a compassionate ear.

The reality for most families raising special needs children is social isolation as our lives revolve around our children’s needs especially in the early years. Since the turn of this century, more people have heard or been touched by the presence of a person with special needs in their lives. Yet few people can really relate to the everyday challenges and concerns of these parents and caregivers.

Much of the early years are spent with parents trying to understand their children’s needs even as they go through denial that their children are developmentally behind their peers.  Few families are lucky to have a helping hand from extended family and friends due to distance and other variables.

Today, more children are diagnosed with special needs than ever before, whether it is Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD), or other neurological disorders. Several organizations fund research and lobby for better laws to protect the increasing special needs population. Whether it is due to better diagnostic tools or other factors the glaring reality is families are looking for answers and solutions to make life better for their children.

Parents and primary caregivers are so invested in meeting their child’s demanding needs that they often overlook their own well being.  It helps to talk to someone who “gets” how overwhelming life can be especially when raising a child with special needs. Some parents have to engage their child with little or no support from their spouses, some others are single parents left to shoulder the entire responsibility of raising their child single-handedly with no respite and that’s no easy task even raising a typically developing child.

I am mindful of the fact that there were millions of children around the world who barely get enough nutrition or attention from an adult let alone access to therapy. If by sharing our experiences of the things we have tried at home and/or school that has produced wonderful results, we could well make a world of difference in the lives of families looking for answers.  Every little success go a long way in making life just a little better for the families.

“Frequently people think compassion and love are merely sentimental. No! They are very demanding. If you are going to be compassionate, be prepared for action.” Archbishop Desmond Tutu
